May 19th 1832
William Durley and a party of four men were on the Galena Road riding to Dixon's Ferry, carrying dispatches to General Atkinson from militia commander James Strode. Durley was killed by a group of warriors, the survivors of the party rode back to Galena where they delivered the bad news. Strode declared martial law and ordered that a fort be built at Galena
