As this just my opinion, this is one of the militas best times proving itself on the field in this war. I mention that Black Hawk is the probale victor because he successfully protected his followers from being captured for the time being until the "Battle on the Miss."

Thanks!

Regards, Bob.

In a military sense, the victor is usually the one who holds the battleground after the smoke from the musketry clears. But in this case, there was no real attempt to hold ground, as the British Band were fleeing and really only implemented what could be classified as a rear guard action. The questions that still surround this action pertains to the number of actual combatants who were involved, and how much resistance was given by the fleeing indians. There is however some redeeming qualities to this battle, such as the use of tactics and terrain features, from this respect I see Wisconsin Heights as being as interesting as the Little Round Top (ACW) or Gallipoli (WWI) http://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/gallipoli.htm as terrain feature played a significant role in the battle.

I agree with Gene that the classic interpretation is: "the army that holds the field is normally deemed the winner."

Regarding terrain, while the terrain aspect is interesting, and the features seen at Wisconsin Heights are impressive, I am not sure how key holding or not holding terrain was to victory at WH. For example, securing "Militia Ridge" did not guarantee victory for the militia, any more than BH's failure to take it guaranteed defeat.

At LRT and Gallipoli, holding terrian was key to the defensive positions of the Union Army and the Turks, respectively. As Gene pointed out, the objective of both sides at Wisconsin Heights was not to hold terrian.

Regards,

Bob.
